The Perfect Maple Latte

For those of us in the Jefferson area, we are privileged to have a unique flavor experience right in our backyard. A house specialty, proudly made with Bissell’s Pure Maple Syrup. If you haven’t heard of it, it’s time you stopped by and gave it try. Since its debut, The Maple Macchiato has become a favorite of first timers and confirmed caffeine addicts alike.

Having no barista experience, I asked Sara Glink, the owner of Wall Street Coffee Company, what the difference was between a Macchiato and a Latte. She said that the ingredients were the same, but the construction distinguishes the Macchiato as a bit more complex than a Latte.

A Macchiato, she said, is layered. From bottom to top, it’s built with: syrup, milk, foam, and lastly espresso.

A Latte has brown foam, because all the components are mixed, and the flavor is consistent throughout. A Macchiato has white foam, because the layers are distinct. It provides different flavor sensations, beginning with the strong espresso taste on top, and getting sweeter towards the bottom.

Although not barista-approved, making your own maple coffee doesn’t have to be doesn’t have to be complicated.

Take heart, non-Jeffersonians. If you’re too far away to try the “real thing”, here’s a simplified recipe you can try at home.

DIY Maple Latte Recipe

Ingredients:

Bissell Pure Maple Syrup (or Bourbon Barrel Aged, if you’re feeling fancy)

Wall Street Coffee Grounds

Instructions:

Step 1: Brew coffee using your desired method (French Press, Pour Over, etc.)

Step 2: Add Maple Syrup to your empty mug, as much as you prefer, and pour the hot coffee over it.

Step 3: (Optional)
Warm and froth milk in a separate container.
For this step you will need any type of frother. If you don’t have one, you can easily substitute with a small immersion blender.

Step 4: Add the milk to your mapled coffee. (In the warmer months, add ice.)

Step 5: Enjoy!

A homemade Latte is less complicated (and may be less beautiful) than this official Maple Macchiato, but Pure Maple Syrup is a great natural sweetener and deserves a place in your daily coffee.
